TOWNSEND -- Sixty-three students at Hawthorne Brook Middle School in Townsend, and five students at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Still River entered the Patriot's Pen competition sponsored locally by Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Ladies Auxiliary.

The $100 first place prize will be awarded to Elizabeth Urda. The $70 second place award will be presented to Miranda Martin. The $40 third place award will go to Kayleigh Bryant.

All three winners attend Hawthorne Brook. Elizabeth and Kayleigh are both in grade 8 and live in Townsend, while Miranda, a seventh-grade student, resides in Ashby.

Rules of this National VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary competition allow for one entry for each 15 or fraction thereof received at the local level to be entered into the District level of competition. As a result, Kayleigh Bryant will also receive $50 for her Patriot's Pen entry placing third in the District 15 competition.

Patriot's Pen winners will receive their awards at a special awards ceremony to be held at the Townsend VFW Post later in the school year.
