AYER -- An equipment fire at a massive electrical plant brought firefighters from three towns to Radisson Road on Friday morning.
Fire Chief Robert Pedrazzi said the department received an automatic alarm call from New England Hydro-Transmission Electric Company, Inc., at 9:58 a.m.
"A failure in one of the bushings that was covered in oil, that's attached to outside of the building, broke off and fell to ground and caught fire," he said.
He did not identify what specific piece of equipment burned. He said suppression foam had to be used to put out the fire.
Pedrazzi said the building suffered significant cosmetic damage, but no structural damage.
The plant is an electrical conversion station, receiving power from Canada.
Devens and Lunenburg firefighters were also at the scene, while Shirley and Littleton firefighter provided mutual aid.
