Where can you find fireworks in the Nashoba Valley to celebrate Independence Day? This year, there are three options for explosive entertainment.
Pepperell starts off the celebration on Saturday with a full day of patriotic festivities. The annual parade steps off at 10 a.m. down Main Street. The day continues at 3 p.m. at the Town Field with music, food and entertainment, including live music on the bandstand from The Goat, Mr. John, J-Rea and Mr. Dean, The Halorines and the Jenny Lynn Duo.
Fireworks conclude the day at 9:30 a..m.
In Groton, fireworks will be held on July 9 at the town field behind the Public Library. The traditional July event will begin with members of the Groton Fire Department preparing hot dogs, hamburgers, fried dough and other great treats, starting at 6 p.m. The fireworks will follow with a spectacular display of color and sound.
Harvard's celebration takes up two full days. On July 2, live music, food and fireworks can be found on the grounds of the Fruitlands Museum with the theme "Harvard Has History - WWI Armistice Centennial, 1918 - 2018."
Despite a crowd estimated at between 10,000 and 12,000 people at Fruitlands last year, the event, which annually costs about $30,000 without town funding, barely broke even. Fourth of July chair Anne Hentz urges attendees to consider that before they try to enter the Fruitlands event without paying the entry fee.
"We would love to be able to pay the bands for their time, but right now we can't.
Gates open 5 p.m., with fireworks to start at sundown (about 9:15 p.m.). The cost is $30 per car/$5 per person on foot/children under 7 on foot free. No discounts will be taken this year. Food will be available for purchase and music is by Wendy Darling and the Lost Boys, Alright, Ashley Jordan, and Bare Hill Band.
Dogs on leash are allowed but not encouraged.
The celebration continues on July 4th in the center of town, with the parade at 11 a.m., followed by the flag ceremony, pie-eating contest, field events (now including a human foosball game) and food from the Lions Club and other vendors.
