Winners announced in Patriot's Pen Essay Competition
TOWNSEND -- Nine Hawthorne Brook Middle School students entered the Patriot's Pen Essay Competition for students in grades six through eight sponsored by Townsend VFW Post No. 6538 and its Auxiliary. "America's Gift to My Generation" was this year's theme.
Owen Grady will receive $100 for placing first in the local competition. Noah Anderson will be awarded $70 for placing second. Both Owen and Noah reside in Ashby. Angela Kopec of Ashburnham will receive the $40 third place award.
The local awards will be presented to the winners at an Open House and Awards Ceremony to be held in the Townsend VFW Post Function Hall in June.
Owen's entry was later entered into the District No. 15 level of competition where it also placed first and for which he will receive an additional $100 award. As the District No. 15 Patriot's Pen Essay Competition winner, Owen will be honored along with the other district winners at the Department of Massachusetts VFW and Auxiliary Patriot's Pen Awards Banquet, to be held in Milford on Jan. 21.
Local students win Voice of Democracy Competition
TOWNSEND -- Nineteen entries were received in the Voice of Democracy Competition for students in Grades nine through twelve, co-sponsored locally by Townsend VFW Post No. 6538 and its Auxiliary and Pepperell VFW Post No. 3291. This year's theme was "American History: Our Hope for the Future."
Madeline Kosman placed first and will receive $150 for that accomplishment.
The awards will be presented to the winners toward the end of the school year.
Groton resident inducted into Sigma Theta Tau
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A Groton resident is among select students from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. who has been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society for Nursing.
In a ceremony this fall, Sigma Theta Tau inducted Caroline Trickett of Groton, among 33 students for the 2017-2018 academic year. Trickett is expected to graduate in May 2018 from Saint Anselm College with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
To be considered for induction into Sigma Theta Tau, students must be in their senior year in baccalaureate programs at accredited institutions of higher education, must have completed at least half of the nursing curriculum, rank in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Groton resident inducted into Alpha Eta
NORTH HAVEN, Conn -- Brianna Fiorentino of Groton, a physical therapy major, was recently inducted into Alpha Eta, the health science honor society, during a ceremony on the North Haven Campus of Quinnipiac University.
Alpha Eta was founded in 1973 with the purpose of recognizing scholarship in allied health students. It was formed in conjunction with the American Society of Allied Health Professionals at Emory University in Atlanta.
Students inducted into the society must exhibit superior academic performance in the field of health science and in overall academic performance.
