AYER -- Voters have agreed with last month's vote by town officials calling for no more than one marijuana retailer setting up shop in town.
Shortly after the special election polls closed on Tuesday night, Town Clerk Susan Copeland announced 235 residents voted in favor of only one non-medical marijuana retailer in Ayer. A total of 67 voters said "no" to the ballot question.
According to state law, a marijuana retailer includes "an entity licensed to purchase and deliver marijuana products from marijuana establishments and to deliver, sell or otherwise transfer marijuana and marijuana products to marijuana establishment and to consumers."
The marijuana retailer general and zoning bylaws calling for no more than one non-medical marijuana retailer operating in Ayer passed during the Oct. 23 Town Meeting. With the passage, the bylaws were also required to pass the ballot vote during Tuesday night's special election.
