PEPPERELL -- Mid-day finds the spacious quarters of Arch Fitness in a waiting mode. Mysterious webbed contraptions hang from a support bean high overhead, a group of stationery cycles huddle under a bank of windows and a corner with wooden flooring sports ballet barres on two sides.
Fortunately, the staff know what to do with that equipment in Pepperell Place.
Lynne Archambault, who owns the gyms with her sister-in-law Gretchen Archambault, got Chip Detwiller doing assisted pull-ups using the webbing, the Jungle Gym XT. The director of leasing for her landlord, the Lexvest Group, looked like he was having fun.
Small group fitness is the specialty of the gym, Lynne said. Members can attend trainer-planned cross-fitness workouts. The classes eliminate boredom from repeating the same exercises at every workout.
As a physical education teacher at North Middlesex High School, Lynne Archambault is quick with another term, "Safety first." The supervised sessions take place under the watchful eye of a trainer.
"Our focus is to have fun," she said.
Classes might call for tipping one of the tractor-sized tires or doing lunges on the rubber section of the floor.
If spin is your thing, the gym has that. Ballet-inspired classes use the barres and wood floor.
Cardio-kickboxing or yoga anyone? And, in September, Zumba arrives.
Lynne began teaching group fitness in Pepperell on the Town Field ten years ago.
"We wanted more space," she said. (Pepperell Place has) been great."
Arch Fitness does not need to maintain a bathroom or changing area. Pepperell Place provides those facilities down the hall and even has showers.
Members range in age from 13 and up.
"I keep people fit into the long term," Archambault said. She finds that in the over 65 crowd, women are generally more fit and flexible than men.
Most of the members are from Pepperell and Groton and other nearby towns.
The first class is at 5:30 a.m. and the gym closes after the last class at 6:30 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.
Arch Fitness is in Pepperell Place on 20 Mill St., Pepperell. They can be found online at www.archfitness.com.
