Near the shore of Lake Mascuppic in Tyngsboro, Claire Cloutier would yell support as triathletes hit the water to begin their "Try the Tri" triathlon.
Cloutier, the race director, was passionate about triathlons -- and fitness.
Sadly, Cloutier died last Aug. 8, at the age of 66, at her Tyngsboro home.
Her friends -- and Cloutier had plenty of them -- will gather Wednesday for the dedication of the Claire Cloutier bench at the Tyngsboro Town Beach. The event will begin at 6:15 p.m.
Friends have renamed the "Try the Tri" series she founded to the "Claire Cloutier Try the Tri" -- and will continue the series as she developed, focusing on introducing new people to the sport.
Cloutier lived a remarkable life. She owned and operated Double C Racing of Tyngsboro and organized such well-known events as the Monster Dash Duathlon, the Mighty Merrimack Swim, the Spring Fling Triathlon and the Mill City Triathlon.
At age 51, yes 51, she learned how to swim. Ten years later she competed in the Arizona Ironman Triathlon by swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles, placing fourth in the women's 60-64 division.
In all, she competed in more than 50 triathlons.
Cloutier left a deep impact on the region. The 1968 Billerica High graduate earned an associate's degree at Rivier College in Nashua, N.H. She worked at the Lowell YMCA for years and later was employed at Hanscom Air Force Base.
