PEPPERELL -- Pepperell is home to one of the oldest youth soccer tournaments in the area, The Pepperell Fall Classic.

It should come as no surprise that the town's youth soccer program is enjoying great success this Spring with the 12U girls, 12U boys, 14U girls and U18 girls teams all qualifying for the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions this weekend at Progin Park in Lancaster by winning the Nashoba Valley Cup last weekend.

"Pepperell Soccer was started back in the mid-1980s by a spirited and dedicated group of parents and has only gotten stronger in the near 30 years since," said Pepperell Youth Soccer 12U girls coach/ league treasure Gerry Morrill.

"It is a volunteer organization and it runs a highly successful fall tournament, the Pepperell Fall Classic that attracts teams from around Eastern Mass and Southern New Hampshire."

Other local teams competing this weekend are the 16U Groton-Dunstable boys and the 14U Townsend-Ashby boys.

Morrill credits the strength of the league for getting Pepperell ready for MTOC play.

"The league is just so well-run," said Morrill.

"It has been for over 30 years. The coaches just instill teamwork in the kids. All of the towns have really good leagues. The Townsend, Pepperell and Ashby girls all end up playing together anyway, when they get to the high school, so it's a healthy rivalry.
