Pomfret School

Students participate in innovative all-school project.

From Dec. 3-18, students and faculty at Pomfret School were at school, but not in the conventional sense. In place of class time and homework, they were instead out tackling one of 29 innovative projects. Among them, designing and building a real footbridge, conducting statistical and laboratory analyses on the economic and nutritional value of organic produce and trying to make sense of the Middle East, the environment, hip-hop music, the practicality of dams; and actually producing and using biodiesel fuel.

Carl Ellerkamp, of Groton, was in the student-faculty team whose project was entitled "Future of Energy."

Thomas Wickham, of Groton, was in the student-faculty team whose project was entitled "'Quiet Corner's' Civil War Soldiers."

Jackie Ordemann, the child of Mr. Robert J. Ordemann and Ms. Pauline V. Saunders of Groton, and a 2011 graduate of Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, participated in the fall 2013 Bates College Junior Semester Abroad program. Ordemann, who is majoring in biological chemistry at Bates, studied in Thailand through the Council for International Educational Exchange Public Health program.

Lauren Carter, daughter of Carole and Mark Carter of Groton, is studying abroad in London for the spring 2014 semester. Carter, a junior media studies, journalism and digital arts major graduated from Groton-Dunstable Regional High School.

Eighth-grader Francesca Paperello, of Groton, was named to the school's honor roll.

Lyndon State College

Lyndon State College awarded David Cowley, of Ayer, a Vermont Association of Broadcasters' Scholarship for the 2013-2014 school year. The award has been established to support juniors or seniors majoring in Electronic Journalism Arts, who demonstrate a record of academic success, leadership, and service.
