AYER -- People who want to learn to read or learn English can now receive free tutoring in Ayer, through Literacy Volunteers of the Montachusett Area (LVMont).
LVMont is part of the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts network, a private nonprofit organization which trains volunteer tutors and specializes in teaching adults whose literary skills are below the 6th grade level or who have limited conversational English skills.
The next Volunteer Information Session for tutors is January 30, 6-8 p.m. at the Fitchburg Public Library, 610 Main St. Fitchburg. Interested persons are asked to RSVP for the information session, which is required before applying to attend a tutor training session.
Two tutor training sessions are scheduled for February:
ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Tutor Training in Leominster: 6-9 p.m., February 6, 8, 13, 15, 27 and March 1(Tuesday and Thursday evenings).
Basic Literacy Tutor Training through the affiliate, Literacy Volunteers of Orange-Athol, in Athol: 3-5 p.m., February 5, 6, 12, 13, 26, 27, March 5, 6, and 12 (Monday and Tuesday afternoons).
LVMont will also offer free citizenship classes, beginning on February 7. The 10-week course, taught by LVMont Board member Eladia Romero, prepares students for the naturalization test and citizenship interview.
