AYER -- A 33-year-old Ayer man investigated for allegedly dealing drugs inside the Worcester County House of Correction is facing firearms charges after a letter he wrote to his girlfriend led police to a gun he allegedly stashed in Ayer, according to court records.
Michael Smith, whose last known address is 229 Snake Hill Road, Ayer, is being held on $10,000 cash bail in connection with a drug and firearms case he is facing in Worcester Superior Court, according to court records.
On May 25, he was arrested by state and Fitchburg police at 45 Walnut St., in Fitchburg, where he was living at the time, after police saw what they believed was a drug transaction and obtained a search warrant for his apartment, according to police reports.
Officers found a loaded revolver, several boxes of ammunition, nine grams of a substance consistent with heroin, a fentanyl patch, assorted pills, and several unknown powders inside Smith's bedroom, according to police reports on the May 25 arrest.
In that case, Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, improper storage of a firearm and possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute, according to court records.
While being held on bail for that case, which remains pending, Smith allegedly wrote a letter to his girlfriend detailing how she could help smuggle drugs into the jail, according to a police report filed in Ayer District Court.
That same letter included a claim that Smith had a gun hidden in storage somewhere outside the jail, according to a police report.
State police detectives attached to the Worcester District Attorney's Office interviewed Smith's mother, who told them Smith had a rented storage unit at a U-Haul self-storage facility on Route 2A in Ayer, according to a police report.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the storage unit, and found a .38 caliber revolver, three boxes of ammunition and several documents containing Smith's name in a back corner of the storage unit, according to a police report.
Smith was arraigned Wednesday in Ayer District Court on charges of possession of a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID, and improper storage of a firearm, according to court records.
Judge Sarah Weyland Ellis ordered Smith held on $7,500 cash bail on the new case, according to court records. Smith is due back in Ayer District Court on Aug. 9 for a pretrial conference.
Smith is allegedly a member of a prison gang and has an 8-page criminal record, according to court records.
