REP. GOBI, FORMER REP. RICE TO TAKE STAND IN PROBATION TRIAL
Speaker Robert DeLeo could become a focus of the case against three former probation department officials as it appears the prosecution is moving to discussion of hiring in the electronic monitoring program. Rep. Anne Gobi, a Spencer Democrat seeking to move up to the Senate in this fall's election, is expected to be called soon as is Robert Rice, a former Democratic state representative from Gardner. Two other names provided by the U.S. Attorney's office as upcoming witnesses, David Fournier and Matt Cipriani, are identified in the indictment as having received jobs at the electronic monitoring program. DeLeo was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee in 2007 and 2008 when John O'Brien, the former probation official allegedly offered up jobs to legislators "political supporters, friends and constituents" at the electronic monitoring facility in Clinton. Before delving into events related to House members, the prosecution will question more witnesses involved in the hiring of Doug MacLean, the former heroin addict and son of former Sen. William "Biff" MacLean, a Fairhaven Democrat. Those include Judge Elizabeth LaStaiti, who already testified about another hire, and Cori Harrington, who was LaStaiti's favored candidate, according to other testimony. - A.
