AYER -- Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts is planning for a second building project in Ayer in 2014 by hosting an informational meeting at Town Hall on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity is looking for members for a Local Project Committee to help guide the building process.

The building is set to be located at 67 Central Ave., where a previous building burned down, leaving only its foundation. At Town Meeting, before 2010, the town authorized selectmen to dispose of the vacant lot. Selectmen have since donated the lot to Habitat for Humanity to build a single-family home.

"The town and Habitat for Humanity are currently working out the terms of the agreement for the land transfer and the project," Town Administrator Robert Pontbriand said. "Ideally, Habitat and the town would like the actual construction to commence approximately by late spring and/or early summer of 2014."

Massachusetts requires all towns to work to set aside 10 percent of their housing as affordable. The three-bedroom home will be put into that category, just as the previous Habitat for Humanity project, at 22 Shirley St., was in 2005. Currently, 8.3 percent of Ayer's housing inventory is classified as affordable.

The Local Project Committee will help with construction and serve on the committee for 18 months, to assist with the planning, fundraising and communication of the project. Although there is no set number of members for the committee, Maggie Monroe-Cassel, executive director of Habitat for Humanity North Central, said 6-12 members would be ideal.


"At the meeting, members of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate will share with attendees the mission of Habitat for Humanity and the responsibilities of a Local Project Committee," said Carolyn Read, a board member of Habitat for Humanity NCM.

Interested residents are invited to join an informational meeting guided by Habitat for Humanity NCM to learn about how to get involved with the funding and planning for the home. The open meeting is scheduled for Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., in the first-floor meeting room of Town Hall.
