As Halloween approaches, the Harvard, Shirley and Ayer libraries have scheduled festive events sure to spook people of all ages.
The Harvard Public Library will host singer-storyteller Steve Blunt to perform some silly and spooky tunes for Halloween Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 10:30 a.m. for a family audience.
"This is the first time we are hosting this event," Children's librarian Jennifer MacMillan said.
Later, at 2:45 p.m., there will be a Halloween Treats Workshop where teens, grades six and up, may come and decorate cookies and other treats baked by Library staff.
Harvard Library is inviting kids ages seven and up to a Pom Pom Monster Salon party on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m.
According to their web site, "Come turn pom-poms into stylish monsters! Starting with yarn and pom-pom makers. We will make pom-poms and then cut and style them to create perfectly coifed mop tops, afros, pigtails and Mohawks. Then we'll add tiny hair bows, punch-out feet, and foam horns and teeth for the final touches."
Pre-registration for these events is encouraged at 978-456-4114.
The Harvard Historical Society has also joined in the fun scheduling a Halloween Storytelling Hour on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Harvard Historical Society, 215 Still River Road. Members of the community will tell stories of local ghost sightings, hauntings, tales and ghoulish writings as eerie organ music is played in the background from an organ dating back to 1870.
"The stories will be from all different time periods," assistant to the Harvard Historical Society Board of Directors Judy Warner said. "This shouldn't be too frightening for most children."
A reception of mulled cider and treats will follow the storytelling. All ages are welcome.
Shirley will welcome "The Stupendous Mr. Magichead Halloween Show" on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Magichead will make his debut "putting the trick back in trick-or-treat," making pumpkins appear, float and vanish. This event is geared toward ages three to 10, but all ages are welcome. Those who wear a costume will get a bag of treats!
Ayer will host its annual array of scary storytimes and movie showings. On Thursday, Oct. 24, the children's room will read "Go Away Big Green Monster" at 10:30 a.m., and "Tom and Jerry Halloween Hi-Jinks" will be shown on Friday, Oct. 25, at 3:30 p.m.
On Halloween afternoon, the Ayer children's room will read "Just Say Boo!" at 10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome, and are encouraged to wear a costume!
