SHIRLEY -- Selectman David Swain, wrapping up Monday night's agenda, introduced a letter from the local American Legion asking the town to kick in "up to $1,000" toward the cost of annual Veterans Day activities.
American Legion Post 183 holds Veterans Day observances at Whiteley Park each year. Commencing at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 and commemorating the date and time the armistice was signed at the end of WWI, the event is followed by a reception with refreshments at the legion hall, located in the basement of the town-owned War Memorial Building.
The request was denied. "We'd love to ... but there's no funding source," Swain said.
Memorial Day is a different story, he said.
The legion hosts observances and a reception on that solemn patriotic holiday as well, assisted by a Town Meeting-allocated $1,000 contribution from the town.
Swain recommended using the same process this time. The legion should bring its request for Veterans Day funding to the Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen during the budget-building cycle, he said, with an eye to taking it to Town Meeting next year.
