LOWELL -- Three members of UMass Lowell's Class of 2013 were honored at a UMass Lowell Air Force ROTC detachment commissioning ceremony held in May.
The honorees included Carlos Diaz, of Townsend, who majored in physics. He will enter active duty as a physicist and nuclear engineering officer.
The graduates were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force.
Members of the UMass Lowell Air Force ROTC program are required to complete intensive studies in areas such as international security policy and Air Force organization and history in addition to the course requirements of their academic majors.
Under the command of Lt. Col. Matthew McSwain, UMass Lowell's Air Force ROTC detachment has received several awards for excellence in recruiting and preparing high-quality officer candidates.
