As most of you know by now, the School Committee has hired Dr. Joseph Connolly to continue on as our interim superintendent in the wake of an unsuccessful search last year for a new, full-time, permanent superintendent.
The School Committee voted at its May 28 meeting to enter into contract negotiations with Future Management Systems (FMS), a consulting/recruiting firm based in Bedford, at a cost of $20,000, to conduct a new search commencing in the fall.
However, on Monday, June 3, Dr. Linda Dwight, principal of HES, submitted a letter to the School Committee expressing her interest in becoming Harvard's next superintendent. The School Committee is now considering the merit of postponing the hiring of FMS to consider Dr. Dwight's application.
Because of the strong community support for hiring a search firm to conduct a new search, the SC would like to hear from residents about their willingness to hire an internal candidate without going through a formal search process as it did last fall.
While the process for screening and evaluating Dr. Dwight has yet to be worked out, it would assuredly entail an opportunity for teachers, faculty, parents and community members to get to know Dr. Dwight better, ask questions and determine whether she is qualified for the superintendent position.
Ultimately, the decision and responsibility rests with the School Committee, but we are seeking input at this stage as we deliberate whether to consider Dr.
Comments and questions can be addressed to the School Committee chairman, SusanMary Redinger (firstname.lastname@example.org), or to the whole School Committee, whose email addresses can be found here: http://www.psharvard.org/school_committee/school_committee.html.
We anticipate making our decision at our next meeting on Monday, June 17.
